10 Tips For Better Business Travel

General

There’s no place like home. Unfortunately, there are those who must travel in their jobs and are expected to perform at their maximum level regardless of jetlag, lost luggage, lost sleep and arguments with the cab driver. However, you can stay on top of your game and give a dynamite presentation when asked to despite the hassles of travel – here are some tips to follow.

Plan ahead. As the saying goes, a man without a plan is not a man. Make sure all your presentations have been completed and saved and everything packed before leaving. Sew up any loose ends you may have with your family before the trip. Call the airline or travel provider to confirm your trip and arrive a good few hours before the flight.

Call your credit card provider to check the surcharge for foreign ATM withdrawals or purchases. Most countries add a 2 to 3 percent surcharge.

What do you need to bring on the trip? A big wallet that can hold tickets, credit cards, passport and receipts all in one place. Don’t leave home without a pen and scratch paper. And in case your cards don’t work, have some cash handy with you.

If you carry lots of metal things in your jacket pockets like phone, keys, coins and pens, it saves a lot of time and hassle to simply remove your jacket and place it on the conveyor belt when going through airport security instead of placing each item in the plastic tray.

A transfer from the destination airport to the hotel can also save you a lot of precious time. Do your homework by finding out the cost and estimated time of arrival for the transfer.

Bring your laptop with you on the flight. The laptop was built as a business tool, and while you may not plan to use it, you’ll never know when it comes in handy. You can relax knowing the baggage handlers can toss around somebody else’s expensive computer.

If you’re flying to another time zone, change your watch to that zone’s time as you take off. Unfortunately, you may also have to change your sleeping habits, but this is important for you to avoid jet lag.

You can do your laundry if you are spending more than one night straight in the same hotel. If you packed light, as you should, this might be necessary.

Continue getting enough sleep and exercise. Exercise can be quite helpful, according to studies that show executives who exercise have a better chance of not messing up at overseas business meetings.

If you must take a cab, negotiate fares up front. And do your negotiations before the trip to avoid getting one-upped by cab drivers looking to make a quick buck off travelers.

However, no tip is more important than showing a positive attitude and smiling despite the hectic travel schedule. A stress free business traveler is a happy business traveler and one who performs better at his or her job.
